a diacritical mark (់) placed over a final consonant of a syllable to indicate that the preceding vowel is shortened (in syllables with no written vowel, it indicates that the inherent vowel is pronounced as ɑ following an A-Series consonant and as ʊə or [u] (before a labial consonant) following an O-Series consonant; in syllables containing the vowel a it indicates that the a is pronounced as [a] following an A-Series consonant and as oa or ea (before a velar consonant) following an O-Series consonant)
